Quartz Countertops: Pros and Cons for Trade Buyers

Quartz is the easiest stone surface to live with: it needs no sealing and resists stains. Its limits are direct heat, strong sunlight and silica dust during cutting.

The short answer

Engineered quartz is made mostly of ground quartz bound with polymer resin. The resin makes quartz non-porous, so quartz countertops need no sealing and resist stains, and factory production gives consistent colour from slab to slab. The same resin makes quartz sensitive to direct high heat and long exposure to strong sunlight.

Five reasons buyers choose quartz

No sealing

The resin makes quartz non-porous, so homeowners never reseal it.

Stain resistance

Wine, coffee and oil wipe off when cleaned in time.

Consistent colour

Factory production keeps the colour and vein style close from slab to slab.

Marble looks without marble upkeep

Calacatta and Statuario styles without etching from acids.

Large formats

Jumbo slabs cover long runs and islands with fewer seams.

Four limits to explain to your customers

Direct heat

Hot pans can mark the resin; customers should use trivets.

Strong sunlight

Long exposure to strong UV can change the colour; quartz is not recommended outdoors in direct sun.

Silica dust when cutting

Cutting engineered quartz releases crystalline silica dust; fabricators need wet cutting and dust control. Australia banned engineered stone from 1 July 2024.

Seams on very large pieces

Pieces longer than one slab need a seam; Jumbo slabs reduce how often that happens.

Quartz pros and cons: questions

Anything else? Ask Auro Quartz »

Do quartz countertops need sealing?

No. Engineered quartz is non-porous because of the resin, so quartz countertops do not need sealing.

Can quartz countertops be used outdoors?

Quartz is not recommended outdoors in strong direct sunlight, because long UV exposure can change the colour of the resin.

Is quartz heat resistant?

Only partly. Direct high heat can mark the resin in quartz, so hot pans should go on a trivet.

Is engineered quartz banned anywhere?

Yes. Australia banned the use and import of engineered stone from 1 July 2024 because of silica dust risks to fabricators.
